Union Sound Company

A warm, purpose-built recording environment designed to feel more like a retreat than a facility.

Union Sound Company transforms a former industrial building into a professional recording studio rooted in calm, clarity, and creative focus. Conceived as an antidote to the intimidation and sterility of traditional studios, the space prioritizes atmosphere, proportion, and acoustic performance in equal measure.

Working within a compact urban envelope, the project was designed from the ground up to support a wide range of recording conditions — from expansive live-room sessions to tightly controlled isolation environments. Generous ceiling heights, acoustically treated rooms, and carefully balanced lighting create spaces that are both technically rigorous and experientially warm.

At the heart of the studio is a large live floor supported by multiple isolation booths and an analog recording core, allowing the space to accommodate full bands, string ensembles, and small orchestras with ease. A private lounge with domestic amenities further reinforces the studio’s intention to support long, immersive creative sessions without fatigue.

With the capacity to host full bands, string ensembles, and even small orchestras, Union Sound also features a private lounge with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom to ensure comfort throughout the recording process.

Realizing this vision involved overcoming potential rezoning challenges. By engaging with key stakeholders—including the local business improvement authority, the planning department, and the local high school—we successfully obtained approval through a Minor Variance application at the Committee of Adjustment. The result is a high-quality, comfortable, and affordable recording space that serves Toronto’s incredible talent and beyond.
