Bookend, Queen West
Merging the warmth of Japanese minimalism with bold, angular geometry, this renovation transforms a traditional Victorian Toronto row house into a light-filled downtown home that feels both timeless and vividly new.
The client’s intentions for the property shifted during a routine mid-winter roof repair, when a simple climb revealed an unexpected, expansive view of the city.
Constrained by a tight urban footprint and dense downtown context, the site offered little opportunity to expand outward, making vertical growth the most natural architectural response. Building upward not only captured the newly revealed view, but also created the framework for the rooftop deck the client envisioned.
The result is a “bookend” that respects the rhythm of its heritage neighbors while confidently asserting a modern identity. It demonstrates that even in the densest neighbourhoods, rigorous design can turn a small Victorian house into a life-changing expansion of space.
Drawing on the client’s reverence for Japanese aesthetics, the interior employs clean lines and tactile materials to create a deep sense of calm that contrasts the bustling streetscape below.
The new third-story retreat and rooftop deck function as a private observatory, lifting the residents above the noise while grounding them in the visual fabric of the city.
