King Township Residence
This project is a renovation of a family home just north of Toronto. The project brief was to expand a residence originally constructed by the owners in the 1970s into a larger home with a larger kitchen for entertaining, an enlarged master suite, an additional guest room and a large home office / den.
The original home was described by the owners as a ‘chicken coop’ due to the shed roof pitching to one side.
The original form was mirrored to simplify the roof line, preserve the original unique character of the home, and to open up the house to views of a conservation valley to the northwest.
The guest room is cantilevered over the driveway to formally express it’s unique character and give guests a sense of individuality while at the same time providing sheltered access to the carport and secondary entrance below.
The original board and batten siding was preserved to maintain the structure’s rustic charm, while new stone retaining walls and decks were added to expand the gardens surrounding the house and to allow year round enjoyment of the outdoors.
