Chicken Coop – House in King City

Aug, 2022

This project involved a renovation to an existing house in the rural areas of King Township.  The clients wanted to expand their existing home to create a warm and welcoming space that could more easily accommodate guests, convert the kitchen into the central meeting space for the home, and expand their existing offices and family spaces.

The design for the project involved adapting the existing ‘chicken coop’ shed roof of the house by adding a second shed roof to one side – giving the house now a butterfly like roof.   Simple, minimal but expressive forms were used.  The new guest bedroom that was added cantilevers over the existing driveway.   Board and batten wood siding was used to retain the rural character of the house.  An additional wood burning stove was added to the upstairs to provide a cozy sanctuary, home office and family room that is enjoyed year round and offers commanding views over the fields to the south.  A two storey entrance room was into the new kitchen of the home that serves as the gathering space.  New decks were added to the south side of the house.
